Gordon Robert Uttley was born April 26, 1885. He was the third of seven children and the third son of John Robert Uttley and Catherine (nee Birmingham).
Birth Record
The birth is not found in the Ontario Birth Indexes of the day. The births of his older brothers are not found there either, so the family was consistent at avoiding the registration of births. The date of April 26, 1885 is found in the 1901 Census.
In his early life he was known as Robert Gordon Uttley. The 1891 Census lists Robert G. as a son of age 5. Ten years later in 1901 the Census again lists Robert G. as a son at age 15.

Gordon Robert Uttley and Alvena Matilda Schultz
on their Wedding Day
- The best man, Frank Rudow was a cousin of Alvena. Any connection with Clara Hofstettler is not known.
When their first daughter was born in September 1907, the couple were living on Strachan Avenue in Toronto and Gordon was working as a boilermaker. The 1911 census shows Gordon, Alvena and their three young children living in Welland. No surprise, Gordon was working as a boilermaker.
In the 1920 Vernon Directory for Kitchener, Gordon and Alvena are listed as homeowners at 91 St George St and he is working at the Canadian Blower and Forge Co. Two years later in 1922 they have moved to 151 Church Street where they remained for the rest of their lives.
